💰 JRF Fellowship — Financial Package
₹37,000 per month plus HRA — this in-hand amount is decent for a research fellowship. The cost of living in Dehradun is also reasonable. 05. How to Apply — Step by Step
Download the Application Form
Go to the official website www.drdo.gov.in. The JRF Application Form in the prescribed format is available there — download it. Do not use a form downloaded from any other source.
Fill the Form Carefully
Fill all information correctly — name as per High School certificate in BLOCK LETTERS, date of birth, category, education details (from Class X onwards), GATE/NET details, experience. Incomplete or partial forms may be rejected.
Attach IPO (General Category)
Get a crossed Indian Postal Order of ₹10 in the name of “The Director, IRDE, Dehradun”. Attach it with the application. SC/ST/OBC are exempt — no IPO required.
Send Email — Single PDF
Scan the signed application form + all documents into a single PDF file. Email it to director.irde@gov.in before the closing date. This step is compulsory — postal application alone is not enough.
Post — Physical Copy
Send the hardcopy application along with all documents to the Director, IRDE, Dehradun. Write “APPLICATION FOR JRF ENGAGEMENT” in BOLD on the TOP of the envelope.

🏁 Is this Fellowship Worth Applying For?
If you are interested in research in Electronics, Computer Science, Physics, or Mechanical Engineering — and you are eligible — then the DRDO IRDE JRF is definitely worth applying for. ₹37,000 stipend plus HRA, 2 years of hands-on defence research experience, and a location like Dehradun — this package is quite decent.
But be realistic — receiving a fellowship offer does not guarantee a permanent job in DRDO. This is for research experience. If you are planning a PhD or want to build a career in defence R&D, this is an excellent stepping stone. If you want a permanent job right now, simultaneously work on improving your GATE score and also look at PSU/DRDO scientist vacancies.
Apply — in the worst case, you’ll have better GATE preparation than before; in the best case, you’ll get a 2-year research opportunity at one of India’s premier defence labs.
